I had planned to write about the wine high-lights of 2009, but then realized as we usher in a new decade that the last ten years have seen a myriad of changes in the world of wine. Here are my picks of the most important wine events of the decade. It seems the only constant in wine is change, and the aughts were no exception.

I have sampled some fantastic sparkling wines in the last few months and have been very impressed by the quality to price ratio these wines deliver. These wines hail from around the globe, but Spain seems to have an upper hand in delivering stellar wines.

A few weeks ago I had the privilege of meeting Michael Dinn; the former sommelier and now winemaker and part owner of JoieFarm Winery located on the Naramata Bench in the Okanagan Valley. He tasted me on the entire line up of outstanding wines that Joie produces.

It has been a while since I have reviewed wines, so this week it's time to catch up and take a close look at some new wine releases. Many wines are released into the market during the early part of the fall to take advantage of the upcoming holiday seasons so this is a great time to explore what's new.

Now that the Golden Ears Bridge is open, it's a good time this summer to explore the emerging culinary and wine region in Langley. There many fruit wineries in this region, however what many people fail to realize is that there a number of VQA wines and quality table wines that are produced in this area. The majority of the grapes for these wines are sourced from vineyards in the Okanagan, but it is in Langley where they are fermented, aged and bottled.

It's been a while since I've sampled amazing quality Pinot Noir. This week, however, I sampled many Pinot Noirs that impressed me a great deal. In this report we'll find out more about this often mysterious grape and then list the Pinot Noir's I've tasted that are available in BC.

I had the privilege of meeting Gordon Fitzpatrick, President of Cedar Creek Estate Winery, one of the oldest and largest quality wineries in the Okanagan. We discussed and sampled Cedar Creek wines and I asked him a few questions about the future of the winery.

In the movie Sideways the Merlot grape was vilified as a bland and boring wine. Most consumers know that ordering a Merlot was usually a safe choice. A majority of Merlot is an easy drinking wine with plumy fruit flavours and a soft finish. The story, however, does not end there.

During the last few months, sales of wines over the twenty dollar mark have seen quite a downturn. This is, of course, the reaction of consumers cutting back on their spending, especially on discretionary purchases such as wine. This shift will definitely impact the world of wine and there will be winners and losers during these difficult economic times.

When someone mentions Zinfandel you probably think about the easy drinking off dry, blush or white Zinfandel style that party goers love to drink. These wines account for over ten percent of all wines purchased in the United States.
